LIDAR

LIDAR stands for Light Detection And Ranging. This is an optical remote sensing technology that can measure the distance to, or other properties of, a target by illuminating the target with light, often using pulses from a laser. The image above is an example of an LIDAR image used for urban modeling. In remote sensing, false color images are common. They serve as a means for visualizing data. The term "false color" refers to the fact that these images are not photographs. Rather, they are digital images in which each image pixel represents a data point that is colored according to its value. So, in LIDAR elevation maps, each pixel represents a certain elevation and is colored on the map accordingly to the color that corresponds to that particular elevation.
