A dot
distribution map is a map that uses dots or other symbols to represent the
presence, quantity, or value of a phenomenon or thing in a specific area. In a
dot distribution map, the size of the dots is scaled in proportion to the
intensity of the variable. The map above is an example of a dot distribution
map of Georgia; the dots in this case represent the richness of freshwater
fishes across the state. It includes all fishes that can be encountered within freshwaters of
Georgia. They also included a selection of marine fishes that enter freshwater
or are commonly encountered within the tidal portions of Georgia's coastal
rivers and streams.
